Abstract
Šećerna bolest ili dijabetes (lat. diabetes mellitus) kronična je metabolička bolest čije su glavne karakteristike perzistentna hiperglikemija te poremećaji u metabolizmu ugljikohidrata, proteina i masti. Razlikujemo šećernu bolest tipa 1, šećernu bolest tipa 2, gestacijski dijabetes te ostale manje zastupljene oblike. Šećerna bolest, zbog svoje brzorastuće prevalencije i incidencije te visoke stope smrtnosti predstavlja veliki javnozdravstveni problem. Dipeptidil-peptidaza IV ili molekula CD26 (DPP IV/CD26) serinska je proteaza i ubikvitinirani multifunkcionalni glikoprotein uključen u brojne fiziološke i patološke procese. Važan je čimbenik u održavanju homeostaze glukoze, prvenstveno jer razgrađuje inkretine. Inhibicija enzimske aktivnosti DPP IV/CD26 pokazala se kao terapija visokog potencijala. Cilj ovog završnog rada je iznijeti pregled različitih aspekata šećerne bolesti, osobito modernijih mogućnosti terapije, s naglaskom na inhibitore DPP IV/CD26 kao učinkovite terapijske opcije.
Abstract (english)
Diabetes (lat. Diabetes mellitus) is a chronic metabolic disease whose main characteristics are persistent hyperglycemia and disturbances in the metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins and fats. Known subtypes are type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, gestational diabetes and other less common forms. Diabetes is a major public health problem due to its rapidly increasing prevalence and incidence and a high mortality rate. Dipeptidyl peptidase IV or CD26 molecule (DPP IV/CD26) is a serine protease and a ubiquitinated multifunctional glycoprotein involved in a number of physiological and pathological processes. It is an important factor in the maintenance of glucose homeostasis, mainly due to its ability to degrade incretins. Inhibition of DPP IV/CD26 enzyme activity has been shown as a high-potential therapy. The aim of this thesis was to provide an overview of various aspects of diabetes, particularly more modern treatment options, with a focus on DPP IV/CD26 inhibitors as effective therapeutic options.
